Signs and suitability

When should your child see a dentist?

Bring your child in for a check-up by their first birthday, then every six months. Book sooner if you notice:

  • Brown or black spots on the teeth
  • Toothache, or crying while eating
  • Swollen or bleeding gums
  • A tooth chipped or knocked out in a fall
  • Crooked or crowded teeth coming in
  • Thumb sucking that continues past age 4

Step by step

What happens at your child's visit

  1. A friendly start

We show your child the chair and instruments so they know what to expect.

  2. Gentle check-up

The dentist checks the teeth, gums and bite, and looks for early decay.

  3. Treatment if needed

Cavities in milk teeth are treated early, before they cause pain or infection.

  4. Brushing guidance

We show you and your child how to brush and which habits protect their teeth.

  5. Next visit

We suggest when to come back, usually every six months.

Questions

Kids dentist questions.

Answers to common questions. For advice about your own teeth, book a check-up.

When should my child first visit the dentist?

By their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing, then every six months.

Why treat milk teeth if they fall out anyway?

Milk teeth help children chew and speak, and they hold space for the adult teeth. Untreated decay can cause pain, infection and crooked adult teeth.

How much toothpaste should my child use?

Under age 3, use a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. From age 3 to 6, use a pea-sized amount, and supervise brushing twice a day.

My child is scared of the dentist. Can you help?

Yes. We go slowly, explain each step in simple words and keep the first visits short and positive.
