Knocked-out tooth
Hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it briefly if dirty, keep it in milk and come in immediately.
Broken tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water, save any pieces and hold a cold compress against the cheek.
Toothache
Rinse with warm water and floss gently to remove trapped food. Never place a painkiller tablet on the gum.
At the clinic
The dentist examines the tooth, takes an X-ray and treats the cause, which may be a root canal, a crown or a splint.

Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?
Often, yes, if an adult tooth is put back quickly, ideally within an hour. Keep it in milk and come to the clinic straight away. Milk teeth are not put back.
When should I go to a hospital instead?
Go to a hospital emergency department if you have swelling spreading towards the eye or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, high fever, heavy bleeding that will not stop, or a head injury.
Do you treat children's dental injuries?
Yes. Children often chip or knock out teeth in falls. Bring your child in as soon as possible, and bring any broken pieces.
What should I do about a severe toothache at night?
Rinse with warm water, take a painkiller you normally use as directed on the pack, and call the clinic when it opens at 10am. Go to a hospital if the face swells or you develop a fever.
I chipped a tooth but it does not hurt. Do I still need to see a dentist?
Yes. A small chip can be smoothed or repaired with a tooth-coloured filling, but a deeper crack may reach the nerve later. Book an appointment within a few days, sooner if the tooth becomes sensitive or painful.
