Step by step
How gum treatment works
Gum examination
The dentist checks your gums, measures the pockets around each tooth and may take an X-ray.
Scaling and cleaning
Tartar and plaque are removed from above and just below the gum line.
Deep cleaning
For deeper pockets, the root surfaces are cleaned and smoothed so the gums can heal and tighten.
Gum surgery if needed
Advanced gum disease may need minor gum surgery, done under local anaesthesia.
Maintenance
Regular cleaning visits and good brushing keep the gums healthy.

Questions
Gum treatment questions.
Answers to common questions. For advice about your own teeth, book a check-up.
Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
Bleeding gums are most often an early sign of gum disease (gingivitis), caused by plaque along the gum line. A professional cleaning and better brushing usually reverse it.
Can gum disease be cured?
Early gum disease can be reversed. Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can be controlled so it stops getting worse, with treatment and regular cleaning.
Is gum surgery painful?
Gum surgery is done under local anaesthesia, so the area is numb. Some soreness for a few days afterwards is normal.
Can gum disease cause tooth loss?
Yes. Advanced gum disease damages the bone that holds the teeth and is a common cause of tooth loss in adults.
Does diabetes affect the gums?
People with diabetes are more likely to get gum disease, and gum disease can make blood sugar harder to control. Tell your dentist if you have diabetes.
