Why a missing tooth should be replaced
A gap does more than change your smile. Nearby teeth tilt, the opposing tooth drifts, and the jaw bone under the gap slowly shrinks. Replacing the tooth protects the rest of your mouth and lets you chew foods like rice, roti and vegetables comfortably on both sides.

How each option works
Dental implant
A small titanium post is placed in the jaw bone where the root used to be. Over a few months the bone bonds to it, and a crown is fixed on top. Implants stand on their own, so the neighbouring teeth are left untouched.
Dental bridge
A bridge is a row of crowns joined together. The teeth on each side of the gap are trimmed and capped, and the false tooth in the middle is held between them. It is fixed in place and can usually be completed in two or three visits.
Denture
A denture is a removable plate with teeth that rests on the gums. A partial denture replaces some teeth and clips to the remaining ones; a complete denture replaces all the teeth in a jaw. Precision BPS dentures are made with a more detailed process for a better fit and bite.
Implant vs bridge vs denture compared
| Implant | Bridge | Denture | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed or removable | Fixed | Fixed | Removable |
| Teeth beside the gap | Left untouched | Trimmed to hold crowns | Not trimmed |
| Rests on | Jaw bone | Neighbouring teeth | Gums |
| Protects jaw bone | Yes | No | No |
| Time to complete | A few months, including healing | Two or three visits | Several short visits |
| Feels like | A natural tooth | Fixed teeth | A removable plate |
| Upfront cost | Highest | Middle | Usually lowest |
Which option suits you?
An implant is often best if
- You are missing one tooth and the teeth beside it are healthy
- You have enough jaw bone, or are willing to have bone added
- You want a fixed tooth that feels natural
- You do not smoke heavily and any diabetes is well controlled
A bridge is often best if
- The teeth beside the gap already have large fillings or need crowns anyway
- You want a fixed result in a few weeks rather than months
- Surgery is not suitable for you
A denture is often best if
- You are missing several teeth or all the teeth in a jaw
- You want the most affordable option
- You would prefer to avoid surgery and trimming of other teeth

Can implants and dentures be combined?
Yes. For people who have lost all their teeth, two or more implants can hold a denture firmly in place so it does not move while eating or speaking. This is a good middle path for many older patients in Gajuwaka whose dentures feel loose.
Questions to ask your dentist
- How much bone do I have, and will I need a bone graft?
- How many visits will each option need, and over how long?
- What will each option cost in total, including crowns?
- How should I clean it, and how often should it be checked?
